Planning a visit to Rome? If so, touring the Colosseum is likely at the top of your list! But, what many first-time visitors don’t realize is that there isn’t just one way to experience it.
From official self-guided tickets to underground tours, arena floor access, small group experiences, and private guides, choosing the right ticket can feel overwhelming.
After spending hours researching our options (and dealing with a canceled tour just weeks before our trip!), here’s what I learned about each type of Colosseum experience and who I think each one is best for.
Option 1: Official Colosseum Tickets
If you’re looking for the most affordable way to visit the Colosseum, buying directly through the official ticket website is usually your best bet.
These tickets are ideal if you:
- Are traveling on a budget
- Prefer exploring at your own pace
- Don’t mind doing your own research before your visit
The biggest challenge? Availability!
The most popular ticket types, like the underground and arena floor experiences, can sell out almost immediately after they’re released!
We set alarms and tried at every ticket release for two days hoping to secure underground tickets through the official website, but every time they disappeared before we could complete our purchase.
If you’re hoping to book this route, be prepared to plan ahead and have a little patience.
Official Colosseum Ticket Release Schedule
If you’re hoping to book directly through the official Colosseum website, timing is everything! The most popular tickets can sell out within minutes, so I recommend setting an alarm and logging in a few minutes before tickets are released.
As of this writing, here’s the general release schedule (Central Standard Time):
- Standard Entry Tickets: Released 30 days before your visit at approximately 2:00 a.m. CST (9:00 a.m. in Rome).
- Arena Floor Tickets: Additional inventory is typically released 7 days before your visit at the same time as your desired entry time in Rome. For example, if you want a 10:30 a.m. Rome entry, those tickets would generally be released 7 days earlier at 3:30 a.m. CST.
- Underground Tickets: These are very limited and are generally released 30 days in advance. They are often the first tickets to sell out, sometimes within minutes—or even seconds.
Keep in mind: Ticket release schedules and availability can change, so always verify the latest information on the official Colosseum website before planning your purchase.
Best for: Budget-conscious travelers and independent explorers.
Option 2: The Underground or Arena Access Tour

The Underground Tour
This is often considered the ultimate Colosseum experience.
The underground level gives visitors access to the chambers beneath the arena where gladiators and animals waited before entering the stadium.
If you’re fascinated by Roman history, this is an unforgettable experience.
We actually booked an underground tour through a third-party company after missing the official ticket release. Unfortunately, it was canceled about three weeks before our trip!!!
While I was disappointed, it reminded me that having a backup plan is always a good idea when traveling.
Best for:
- History enthusiasts
- Repeat visitors to Rome
- Travelers checking off a bucket-list experience
One Important Note: Since our visit, and at the time of publishing this blog post, the Colosseum has changed its ticketing policies. Underground access is now generally available only through the official Colosseum ticketing system. If seeing the underground is at the top of your Rome bucket list, plan ahead, watch the official ticket release schedule, and be prepared to book as soon as tickets become available.
Arena Floor Experience
Want something a little more immersive than a standard Colosseum visit? An Arena Floor tour is an excellent upgrade.
These tours let you step onto the reconstructed arena floor, where gladiators once stood before thousands of spectators. It’s a unique perspective that most visitors don’t get, and it offers some incredible photo opportunities while helping you appreciate the sheer scale of the Colosseum.
Best for:
- First-time visitors looking for something beyond the standard ticket
- Travelers who want a more immersive experience
- Anyone hoping for spectacular views and unique photo opportunities
- Visitors who want a premium experience without the challenge of securing underground access
Option 3: Small Group Guided Tour (My Recommendation)

After our underground tour was canceled, we booked this small group tour that included the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill.
Looking back…
I wouldn’t change a thing!
Our guide completely transformed the experience.
Instead of simply walking through ancient ruins, we learned how the Colosseum actually functioned, what daily life looked like in Ancient Rome, and how the Forum served as the center of Roman political and social life.
Without a guide, I think much of the Roman Forum would have just looked like beautiful ruins.
Instead, every column, temple, and pathway told a story.
Even though we didn’t get to see the underground, we left feeling like we truly understood what we were seeing.
Best for:
- First-time visitors
- Families
- Travelers who enjoy learning the history behind the sights
Option 4: Private Tours
If you prefer a more personalized experience, private tours are another excellent option.
You’ll move at your own pace, have plenty of opportunities to ask questions, and often enjoy a more flexible itinerary.
While they’re more expensive, they can be well worth it for families, multi-generational groups, or travelers celebrating a special occasion.
Best for:
- Families
- Luxury travelers
- Anyone wanting a customized experience

So…Which Colosseum Tour Should You Choose?
Here’s my advice based on the type of traveler you are.
Choose official tickets if…
- You’re traveling on a budget.
- You’re willing to wake up early to get tickets at official release times.
- You enjoy exploring independently.
- You’re flexible with planning.
Choose the underground or arena access tour if…
- Ancient Roman history fascinates you.
- You’re willing to plan well in advance.
- Seeing exclusive areas is a priority.
Choose a small group tour if…
- It’s your first visit to Rome.
- You want the history to come alive.
- You’d rather spend your time enjoying the experience than figuring everything out yourself.
Choose a private tour if…
- You value flexibility.
- You’re traveling with a group, small children or extended family.
- You want a more personalized experience.
- You have a larger budget.
My Final Thoughts
If I were planning another first trip to Rome, I’d still choose a guided tour.
Yes, I would have absolutely loved to experience the underground. But I never felt like our trip was incomplete because our guide made the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill come alive in ways I never could have experienced on my own.
